On September 24, 2026, the “Belt and Road” China–Russia Sports Medicine Exchange and Cooperation Forum (Shanghai), organized by Delta Medical, was successfully held at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University. The visiting Russian delegation consisted of four senior sports medicine physicians, most with over 20 years of clinical experience. As first-tier experts in Russian arthroscopy, they possess deep academic foundations and extensive clinical expertise in shoulder, knee, and meniscal injuries as well as pediatric orthopedics. The exchange comprised four sessions — a department tour, live surgery observation, a visit to the rehabilitation center, and an academic symposium — giving the Russian experts a comprehensive view of Huashan Hospital’s disciplinary strength, clinical care system, and academic achievements.

Department Tour | A Legacy of Excellence

At the start of the exchange, accompanied by the team of Director Hua Yinghui, the Russian delegation toured the Department of Sports Medicine at Huashan Hospital. With a long and distinguished history as one of the birthplaces of sports medicine in China, the department is a National Key Clinical Specialty that has long led the development of sports medicine and arthroscopic minimally invasive techniques in the country. It also undertakes medical support for many national teams, and its comprehensive strength in medical care, education, and research ranks among the best in China. The tour gave the Russian experts a direct understanding of the department’s leading position in the country.

Live Surgery Observation | Clinical and Technical Excellence

The delegation then entered the operating rooms to observe three arthroscopic procedures performed by Director Hua Yinghui’s team: ankle instability ligament repair, rotator cuff repair, and ligament reconstruction for patellar instability. Throughout the procedures, the Russian experts closely followed the operative workflow and raised questions on surgical strategy and key technical steps after each surgery, gaining a deeper understanding of the standard of minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques in China.

Rehabilitation Center Visit | A Focus on Postoperative Rehabilitation

After the surgery observation, the delegation visited the Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Center of Huashan Hospital. Rehabilitation therapist Xu Kela gave the Russian experts a detailed introduction to the center’s overall operation model, explaining the assessment protocols, rehabilitation interventions, and equipment for various sports injuries of the ankle, knee, and shoulder. The Russian experts showed great interest in China’s sports injury rehabilitation system, engaged in thorough discussions on rehabilitation planning and clinical outcomes of the equipment, and gained a more concrete understanding of the concept of “exercise promotes health.”

Academic Symposium | Exchanging Clinical Experience

In the afternoon, Huashan Hospital, together with the Shanghai Sports Medicine Quality Control Center, organized a special academic session focusing on sports injuries of the shoulder, knee, ankle, and elbow, pediatric sports trauma, and challenging arthroscopic techniques, featuring专题 lectures and difficult case discussions. Drawing on a large number of real clinical cases, the Chinese experts systematically shared domestic diagnostic approaches and surgical experience on topics including persistent elbow instability, reverse shoulder arthroplasty, arthroscopic treatment of tennis elbow, anterior shoulder instability with bipolar bone loss, medial meniscus bucket-handle tears, FIA diagnosis and treatment, lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty with varus deformity, and adolescent patellar instability. Based on clinical practice in their home country, the Russian experts shared their experience in two areas — persistent elbow instability and the use of superficial quadriceps tendon grafts in ACL reconstruction — analyzing the practical problems and technical challenges encountered in local clinical work.

The symposium was marked by a lively atmosphere of interaction. Participants fully exchanged views on practical clinical issues such as technique selection, complication prevention, and rehabilitation planning. Clinical thinking from different regions collided in depth, achieving two-way sharing of clinical knowledge and practical experience.
