Chinese Sports Medicine Advances into Laos

Academic Exchange and Surgical Demonstration

From December 9 to 14, 2025, Professor Li Yanlin, Director of the Department of Sports Medicine at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, led his sports medicine team to Mittaphab Hospital in Laos for academic exchange and live surgical demonstrations.
The program focused on internal brace–augmented anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, with systematic instruction covering both theoretical concepts and clinical practice. As a key supporter of this initiative, Delta Medical participated throughout the program, providing comprehensive technical and product support to ensure the smooth implementation of all academic and clinical activities.

During the exchange, Professor Li’s team joined the hospital’s daily morning clinical handovers, conducted in-depth discussions on representative cases, and performed preoperative ward rounds to develop personalized surgical plans for patients. Throughout the surgical procedures, the team worked in close coordination, successfully completing multiple operations. Critical surgical steps were explained in detail intraoperatively, followed by structured postoperative rehabilitation guidance, fully demonstrating the professional expertise and clinical commitment of the Chinese sports medicine team.

Addressing Clinical Challenges in a Developing Market

Mittaphab Hospital is one of the busiest orthopedic centers in Laos. Due to transportation conditions and environmental factors, traumatic knee injuries are relatively common, while local sports medicine techniques remain at an early stage of development.
Historically, ACL reconstruction has largely relied on traditional techniques, resulting in variability in surgical quality and a relatively high incidence of revision cases.
During this exchange, Professor Li personally performed two high-difficulty revision surgeries, including a complex case involving simultaneous anterior and posterior cruciate ligament revision. After comprehensive evaluation, an all-inside reconstruction reinforced with an internal brace was adopted, allowing the procedures to be completed efficiently within a shortened operative time. The clear surgical strategy and standardized technique received strong recognition from attending Laotian surgeons.
